Glossary

There are many terms we use in our cosmetic language; our purpose here is to define the most common terms you will read about in our web site and hear about as you develop your packages. We expect to add to this glossary frequently. If you have a specific term you need defined let us know and we will add it to our list.

Actuator:
Is the top of a pump that is pressed to open the dispenser valve to allow dispensing of the product.

Aluminum - High Purity:
Aluminum with a minimum amount of other elements. This is the metal used to achieve a high gloss shiny finish in anodizing

Aluminum - Low Purity:
Aluminum with trace amounts of other elements. This metal is used to produce matte aluminum colors in the anodizing process; and is the aluminum used for a part that is buffed and lacquered.

Anodize:
Is an electrochemical process which prepares the surface of aluminum to achieve either a shiny or matte finish. The component can then be dyed to a custom color. The anodized finish is very durable and resists scuff and scratch

Assembled:
Two or more parts put together to form the final piece.

Axial - Pull:
Vertical force applied to a part

Buff - Brushed:
In the buffing process a wire wheel is used to lightly scratch the surface of the part to give it a textured appearance.

Buff and Lacquer:
A raw aluminum shell is placed on a 'buff chuck' and then polished to a shiny finish. The buffed shell is then cleaned and coated with a custom colored lacquer to meet the customers' color standard.

Cavities (molding)
are the hollow sections of an injection mold which form the outside shape of a plastic part.

Compatibility:
The ability of a finish, decoration, or material to resist degradation or physical change caused by the product it will come into contact with.

Conventional Bake Lacquer:
A painting system that uses volatile organic compounds which are cured by high heat.

Cores (molding):
A steel cylinder which forms the inside dimensions of a plastic part in an injection mold.

Cycle (molding):
the amount of time required to produce one complete set of parts from an injection mold.

De-boss:
is artwork pressed into the sidewall or top of a metal surface to form lettering or a design below the surface of the piece. See roll and arbor

EGL:
Eyelematic Golf League!

Emboss:
is artwork pressed into the sidewall or top of a metal surface to form letters or a design above the surface of the piece. See roll and arbor

Etch:
Treatment of a metal surface with an acid chemical to create an aesthetic finish.

Eyelet Machine:
A metal forming machine which is used to shape strips of aluminum, or other metals, into close tolerance shapes by pressing the material between a die and a punch.

Eyelet - Progressive:
A very high speed eyelet machine that pulls the metal strip through the machine as the parts are formed out of it.

Eyelet - Transfer:
A metal disk is stamped out of a strip of material and is then 'transferred' from station to station by a series of fingers.

Ferrule:
An aluminum shell, or collar, which is used to connect a pump to a container, by crimping the ferrule around the lip of the container.

Flash:
Excess plastic material on a plastic part that forms when two sections of an injection mold are not fit tightly together.

Flow Lines:
Are lines in a plastic part formed as the hot resin flows through the cavity in an injection mold.

Gate:
Is where the molten resin enters the cavity in an injection mold

Glossy or Bright:
The amount of surface sheen or reflection on a part.

HDPE:
High Density Polyethylene

HIPS:
High Impact Polystyrene

Hot Stamping:
Is a process where a custom colored foil is passed between a hot die which duplicates your artwork and your aluminum or plastic component to deposit your graphics onto the component

Injection Molding:
Is the process where molten resin is forced through a gate into the space between the cavity and the core-pin.

Lining - Caps:
Is a process to put a specified type and thickness of a membrane of material inside a threaded cap to form a tight seal between the lip of the container and the cap. Most common lining materials are F-217 - three layers of foamed plastic; LP- 217 foamed plastic layers with a Surlyn barrier; WP - 217 foamed plastic with an aluminum barrier

LDPE:
Low Density Polyethylene

Matte:
A color with a dull or soft luster surface

MET:
Eyelematic's name for a polypropylene jar assembled into an aluminum shell.

ml:
milliliter - metric measurement of capacity i.e. 50ml jar

mm millimeter:
- metric measurement of length. Example a 70mm/400 jar cover has an inside diameter of 70mm and an inside height of .400 of an inch!

Packing - Bulk:
Parts are packed loosely into a container as they come off a machine

Packing - Layered:
A Process where parts are packed side by side.

Packing - Nested:
Each part is packed into an individual paperboard cell

Packing - Tray:
Parts are placed individually into a separate pocket in a thermoformed tray. This tray can then be used to "feed" the filling equipment where it is used.

Parting line:
is a thin ridge of material on a plastic or glass part that is a witness to where the two halves of the mold that produced the part come together.

PET:
also PETE and PETG is polyethylene tetraphthalate, the resin used in Eyelematic's thick wall jars.

Pintel:
A stopper that usually presses into another plastic piece already assembled to a bottle to achieve a seal of the package.

PS:
Polystyrene

Primary Package:
The container that is in contact with the product.

Regrind:
Plastic which is ground up again to be re-used in the injection molding process.

Roll and Arbor:
To achieve an embossed (raised) or de-bossed (depressed) shape or logo in your part the last station of the eyelet process is equipped to roll in your design onto the side-wall of the metal shell.

SAN:
Styrene Acrylonitrile

Satin:
a color that is subdued, smooth, with a light gloss.

Screen printing or Silk Screening:
is achieved by a photographic process that transfers your artwork onto a porous nylon screen which allows your custom color ink to flow through the screen and be deposited on your aluminum or plastic component.

Scuff-free edge:
An eyelet forming process where the open edge of an aluminum shell is formed at half the material thickness then rolled over on its' self to form a smooth edge.

Sink Mark:
A slight depression on the surface of a plastic part

SKU:
Stock Keeping Unit

Torque:
Force applied in a circular motion

Unit Cavity:
A one cavity mold

UV- coatings:
A painting system where the lacquer is cured by ultra violet lights.
